Summerset Abbey Virtual Book Tour

SUMMERSET ABBEY
by T. J. Brown

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Reminiscent of Downton Abbey, this first novel in a new series follows two sisters and their maid as they are suddenly separated by the rigid class divisions within a sprawling aristocratic estate and thrust into an uncertain world on the brink of WWI...
Rowena and Victoria, daughters to the second son of the Earl of Summerset, have always treated their governess’s daughter, Prudence, like a sister. But when their father dies and they move in with their uncle’s family in a much more traditional household, Prudence is relegated to the maids’ quarters, much to the girls’ shock and dismay. The impending war offers each girl hope for a more modern future, but the ever-present specter of class expectations makes it difficult for Prudence to maintain a foot in both worlds.
Vividly evoking both time and place and filled with authentic dialogue and richly detailed atmosphere, Summerset Abbey is a charming and timeless historical debut.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:  A lump rose in her throat as she caught sight of the ornate casket, draped with a full spray of lilies, carnations, and palm fronds. The only reason she was here, clutching Rowena’s and Victoria’s hands in hers instead of shrinking into the background with the other servants, was the kindness of the man who lay inside. After Prudence’s father had died, her mother, who had worked at Sir Philip’s estate as a girl, had been sent to attend to Rowena and Victoria’s ailing mother. When his wife died, Sir Philip asked her to stay on to help raise the girls, and Prudence, exactly between his daughters in age, became part of the family. Prudence, who volunteered her time at several different poorhouses in the city, knew exactly what happened to young girls left alone in the world. She would forever be grateful to Sir Philip for not allowing that to happen to her.

She blinked away her tears and occupied herself by looking at the rest of the congregation. Only a few looked familiar. Among them were Rupert Brooke, the high-strung and handsome young poet; Ben Tillett, the iron-jawed union leader; and Roger Fry, the controversial artist responsible for bringing London’s shocked attention to postimpressionism some years prior. These were some of Sir Philip’s friends, a motley collection of artists, intellectuals, and misfits.

Because the Earl had arranged the funeral, most of the people in attendance were his peers, men from the House of Lords and others from the cream of London society.

Sir Philip would have hated it.

The beautiful gold arches and polished marble of St. Bride’s Church gleamed, just as they had the few times the family had attended church. Sir Philip had chosen St. Bride’s because, as he used to say, “Sir Christopher Wren built the kind of church that God might actually enjoy.”

Gradually, Prudence became aware of a young man staring at her from across the aisle. Her eyes darted in his direction, then away. Moments later, unable to help herself, she glanced back to see whether he was still looking at her. He was. She turned slightly and stared fixedly at the bronze candelabra to the left of him, her cheeks burning.

Victoria leaned around her to whisper to Rowena. “Look, Lord Billingsly has noticed our Prudence.”

“I’m right here,” Prudence whispered, and gave both their hands a hard squeeze for emphasis.

She didn’t look his way again.

Once the service started, Prudence sank into a well of grief that threatened to drown her. The waves of it lapped at her from all sides, covered her head, and made sight almost impossible. Inside, her heart broke and a waterfall of sorrow poured from the cracks. On one side, Victoria sobbed quietly, while Rowena’s stiff resolve buoyed her from the other. She clung to their hands as the service passed in a blur of speeches.

They remained that way until it was time to get into the ornate black and gold funeral carriages that would take them back to their home in Mayfair for the reception. Behind the carriages stood a line of motorcars; most of the wealthy guests had long given up their carriages for the convenience and speed of automobiles. The Earl himself had several, and Sir Philip’s sleek Eton-blue Belsize sat idle in the carriage house, but the Earl insisted on traditional horse-drawn carriages.

“Miss Tate will ride in the staff carriage.” The Earl’s voice brooked no opposition and his square jaw firmed. Prudence knew that look. Rowena’s pretty face held the same expression when she got all stubborn about something.

Victoria’s eyes widened. “Prudence rides with us.”

“Nonsense. The Duke of Plymouth wishes to join us and there isn’t enough room.”

Prudence placed her hands on Victoria’s shoulders. Tension vibrated through the young girl’s slender body and Prudence’s stomach knotted, sure that Victoria was going to throw a fit, the kind she used to throw when the family still called her baby and she wanted the biggest sweet in the shop. Even at eighteen, Victoria wasn’t above a tantrum or two if she thought the situation warranted it. But her waiflike face suddenly fell and her lower lip trembled.

“It’ll be all right,” Prudence whispered. “I’ll go back with the staff and meet you at home.”

Vicious

Vicious
V. E. Schwab

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

  1. Tell us a little about how this book is different from Near Witch.

--Haha, VICIOUS is as different from NW as a book could possibly be while still being mine. It’s set in the near future, and it’s very staccato instead of lyrical, and follows two disturbed pre-med students on a mission to create superpowers.

2. Heels or flats?

--Boots.

3. Pizza or sushi?

--Sushi

4. Name three things on your desk right now...

--A Loki funko pop doll, a calendar covered in stickers (I use it to gauge writing progress), and a notebook.

5. What is your favorite type of character to write about?

--The villain.

6. Plotter or pantster?

--Connect-the-dots-er.

7. Favorite ice cream flavor?

--Dark chocolate fudge brownie.

8. What advice would you tell someone just starting out writing their first novel length work? Is there a book on writing that was particularly useful?

--I am not really onto the books on writing (I’m sure they’re great, but I don’t find prescriptions as prescriptive as practice), but I would say get to the end of a draft. Finish it. Because you can’t fix something until you have something to fix.

9. What's next on your writerly horizon?

--The sequel in my YA series about a library of the dead (THE UNBOUND), a MG series about a very strange guardian angel (EVERYDAY ANGEL), and an adult book I’m not allowed to announce yet about multiple versions of London (one you know, two you don’t) with magic and thieves and other fun things.

10. If you had a comic superpower, what would it be?

--I would want to be able to control time, but only forward—pause, slow motion, fast forward. Going backward is where everything seems to go wrong.

Thank you Victoria for stopping by Bookgirl Knitting and giving us a glimpse into Vicious!

Review:

Going into this book without reading the first in the series, I was lost for a moment or two, but as the story ramped up, the blanks began to fill themselves in without a problem. The Enclave is a society that tries to keep a hold on rouge DEAD's, vampires that love to kill without conscience. It is a needed organization in a world where you can go missing if a vampire decides he wants a snack. When Gabrielle's sister drops off the radar, she panics heading right into a nest of DEAD's. Arran and Gabrielle share a past that is torn by desire and heartbreak. Can they put it behind them to save her sister or is too late for them both?

I loved this story. It had all the forbidden passion that comes when you mix a human and vampire relationship. Gabrielle still has figurative and literal scars from her brush with a DEAD. Arran saved her, but walked away and that just pissed her off. He keeps walking away, even when she is determined to win him as her own. Great book, sexy scenes and the tension between the two characters was scorching.

Finder's Tome: The Virtual Tour

Finder’s Tome
by TMarshall

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The Deadly Gates have been opened. An exiled prince plots the return of trolls into FourPosts.
Jacob “Feather” Moore is given an ancient book to read. It shows him where he can find Mandrake’s Key, an artifact with the power to lock the Deadly Gates.
Forced into a race for his life and the future of FourPosts, Feather is pursued through caverns, deserts and foreign cities. Lost, hungry and alone, the boy struggles to reach the Great Hollow and the portal it holds. His only hope lies in the visions given by the book called Finder’s Tome.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Five:

In this scene, Feather, having just finished fighting a band of hobgoblins, meets the half-elf Chelsey for the first time.

“Um Geoffrey, we might have a problem.”

“What is it?” He turned and saw the giant beast closing on them. “It’s a Wildebear. They are said to embody the spirits of the forest. Where did it come from?” He raised the glass rod and pointed it at the magical creature.

An arrow stuck in the ground at the wizard’s feet. “Don’t you dare!” A female voice came from the trees above them.

Feather squinted, looking for the shadow he had seen earlier.

The ground thumped to Feather’s right. He flinched.

A woman stood next to him. She wore a long, brown and gray fur cloak. She had a thin frame and was as tall as Feather. Her auburn hair was pinned back from her temples, revealing long pointed ears. Almond-shaped eyes, the color of emeralds, held Feather’s stare. In her hands, she held a delicate silver bow aimed at Geoffrey’s chest.

“Who are you and why are you in my forest?” The elfish girl asked, her eyes narrowing.

Geoffrey’s lips turned into a gentle smile. “Looking for you I believe, Chesley Fa’Quin.”

Chelsey’s brow furrowed as she strapped the bow to her back. “How do you know my name?”

“You’re beautiful.” Feather clamped a hand over his mouth and looked down. His heartbeat pounded in his temples while his face heated. “I’m sorry, I just expected someone living in the woods to be more… rough-looking.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Amidst murder and betrayal, destiny and hearts collide when scandal forces a nobleman and a  gypsy to marry in this Regency Romance.
Half Romani, half English noblewoman, Evangeline Caruthers is the last woman in England Ian Hamilton, the Viscount Warrick, could ever love—an immoral wanton responsible for his brother’s and father’s deaths. She thinks he’s a foul-tempered blackguard, who after setting out to cause her downfall, finds himself forced to marry her—snared in the trap of his own making.
When Vangie learns the marriage ceremony itself may have been a ruse, she flees to her gypsy relatives, declaring herself divorced from Ian under Romani law. He pursues her to the gypsy encampment, and when the handsome gypsy king offers to take Ian’s place in Vangie’s bed, jealousy stirs hot and dangerous.
At last, under a balmy starlit sky, Ian and Vangie breech the chasm separating them. Peril lurks though. Ian’s the last in his line, and his stepmother intends to dispose of the newlyweds so her daughter can inherit his estate. Only by trusting each other can they overcome scandal and murderous betrayal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Three:

Wedding Reception Scene.

“You didn't eat much, wife.”

They were alone on the dance floor. Ian deftly twirled Vangie around his aunt's smallish ballroom, mindful of the interested eyes watching them.

Stealing a glance at the smiling and nodding onlookers, he suppressed a frown. He felt like a curiosity on display at Bullock's Museum. He wished others would take to the floor, so he could dispense with the devoted bridegroom facade.

The twelve courses at dinner had been tortuous. His wife hadn’t taken more than a dozen bites nor said as many words. He'd tried to eat the succulent foods Aunt Edith had gone to such efforts to have prepared, but his anger made everything dry as chalk and every bit as tasteless.

“I'd not much appetite, my lord.”

He chuckled. “Don't you think you might address me by my given name, wife?”

“Why?” she asked pertly. “I've known you but four days, certainly not long enough to be so familiar with you.”

He lowered his head, breathing in her ear, very aware every eye in the room was trained on them. He'd give them something to gossip about. “Because I want you to, wife, and you did promise to obey.”

He nipped her ear.

She jumped and a tiny yelp of surprise escaped before she clamped her lips together. Her eyes were shooting sparks again, only this time they were directed at him.

“What's my name, wife?”

“Please, don't call me that. I too have a name, as you well know.”

Drawing her closer, her breasts pressing against the breadth of his chest and cresting the edge of her bodice, he murmured, “Indeed, but Evangeline sounds . . . angelic, and we both know you're no such thing.”

“Pardon?” She stiffened, trying to shove away from him. “I don't under—”

His head descended again. “Say it, or I'll trace your ear with my tongue.”

He grinned as her breath hissed from between clenched teeth. She stumbled, her fingers digging into his shoulder and hand. A very becoming flush swept across her face.

“Will you cease?” Her worried gaze careened around the room. “We're being watched.”

Voice husky, he said, “Say my name, sweeting.” Giving her a gentle squeeze, he started to dip his head, caressing her elegant neck with his hot breath.

“Ian, your name is Ian,” she gasped breathlessly, twisting her head away.

The Tempest Murders Virtual Book Tour

The Tempest Murders
by p.m. Terrell

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A provocative story of a love that spans centuries, of soul mates found, lost and reunited… and the lengths to which one man will go to change their destiny.
Irish Detective Ryan O’Clery is working a series of homicides in America when he discovers a journal written by an uncle, Constable Rian Kelly, five generations earlier. The journal detailed the same type of murders as the worst storm in Ireland’s history slammed into the island in 1839.
As Hurricane Irene barrels toward the North Carolina coastline, Ryan discovers even the killer’s description matches his cases exactly. And as he falls in love with television reporter Cathleen Reilly, he begins to wonder if she is the reincarnation of Caitlin O’Conor, Rian Kelly’s lover—the woman who was lost to the killer as the storm raged in Ireland—and if he is the reincarnation of Constable Rian Kelly.
Now he’s in a race to rescue Cathleen before the killer finds her—or is history destined to repeat itself?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Three:

“I know you too well,” Claire said. “You’re wanting the story of Caitlín O’Conor, aren’t you?”

“Who?”

She smiled. “Her name was Caitlín O’Conor. She was supposedly the great love of Ríán Kelly’s life. It was a star-crossed love story. Her father was a prominent man in the village and Ríán was a ‘lowly county inspector’ and though they were deeply in love, her father would not permit Ríán to ask for her hand in marriage.”

He felt his chest tighten and he sipped his coffee to avoid Claire’s piercing eyes.

“The tale is that they sneaked around for years; everybody knew it. Everybody except Caitlín’s father, that is. They were madly in love.” She sighed wistfully.

“What happened?” He kept his eyes on his coffee. “Did she marry someone else?”

“Her father died. Quite unexpectedly. Heart simply stopped. And without him in the way, they were clear to be married.” She brushed non-existent crumbs from the countertop before continuing. “He asked for her hand in marriage on New Year’s Eve. Let’s see, I believe it was 1838. Yes, that’s right. December 31, 1838.”

“How can you be so certain of the date?”

“Because seven days later, Caitlín was dead.”

His head jerked up and he stared into Claire’s eyes. They were as green as the fields of Ireland and now she cocked her head and eyed him curiously.

“He’d gone to Dublin, so the story goes,” she continued slowly.

“Ríán Kelly.”

“Aye. He’d been called away on business. And as Fate would have it, the great flood came while he was gone and Caitlín was swept away. It was January 6, 1839—Epiphany.” Her voice took on a whispered note as though she was telling a ghost story. “There were those in the faith who had forecast the end of the world would occur on January 6, 1839—the day of Epiphany. So when the air grew completely still, so still they could hear the voices of neighbors miles apart, there were some who thought the end was near.”

He waited for her to continue. His cheeks were growing flush and he could feel beads of sweat beginning to pop out across his brow. “What happened then?”

“By nightfall, there were gale force winds. They moved from the western coast of Ireland all the way to Dublin, where Ríán Kelly had traveled. Some said the winds were accompanied by an eerie moan, a rumbling of sorts. But not thunder; it was a sound never heard before nor since. It increased as the winds grew. And then the northern sky turned a shade of red that had never been seen before.

“Well, so the myth goes, Ríán Kelly left Dublin immediately. It was a miracle he made it back to the village at all. He traveled through the night, in the rain and the hail, with the winds all about him. Bridges had been washed away; the wind had been so strong—stronger than anything Ireland had experienced in more than three hundred years—so strong that it whipped the Atlantic into a fury and pushed it all the way across the island. Streams and creeks became raging rivers. Whole villages were wiped out. Even some of the castles were beyond repair.”

He rested his elbows on the counter and put his head in his hands.

“You’re sure you don’t want to lie down, Re? You look as if you might faint.”

“I’m fine,” he said. “What happened when Ríán Kelly reached his village?”

“It was gone. Oh, there were a few buildings still intact. The church, for one. But Caitlín O’Conor’s home had been washed away. There was no sign of Caitlín.”

“So that’s where the story ends, does it?”

“Oh, no. I suppose it’s where it just begins.”

Jenny Kane: Another Cup of Coffee

Coffee Anyone?  Introducing Jenny Kane!

Hello! Thank you ever so much for inviting me along today to tell you a little about the ‘new me’!

Some of you may have come across my work before. For the past 9 years I have been writing erotica under the name of Kay Jaybee, and I’ve been lucky enough to talk about a number of ‘KJB’ books with Erzabet in the past.

I love ‘being’ Kay- she is very much braver than I am, and it is such fun taking on her persona to weave tales of erotic romance, BDSM, and voyeurism. However, there is another side to me- a more realistic side if I’m honest. A shyer, less confident writer, who has always planned to widen her literary horizons beyond erotica, but never had the nerve to try!
It’s a daunting thing trying to get a new book published, even if you already have a proven track record in your field. To jump the fence and branch into a different field altogether is a bit like starting all over again. It took an awful lot of persuading from my friends and family to take the leap into this additional literary world!

Some months later, when I’d polished my first romantic novel to the point where if I read it one more time my eyes would have taken the print off the page, I bit the bullet, and sent Another Cup of Coffee off to a publisher.

The plot line for Another Cup of Coffee- which is more a story of modern friendship with romance, than a romantic story- has been simmering in the back of my head for years. In fact it first hit the paper in a very rough form before I’d ever dreamt up my first erotic tale. With every expectation of being rejected, I waited- and made myself forget all about it- and then- to my continued surprise- three months later my dream came true- a yes from Accent Press!!!!

And so now, not only can you read my smuttiness as Kay, but you can curl up with my cosier side! Think comfort food, think book chocolate, think something to read on the sofa on an Autumn evening, while you get lost in the life of Miss Amy Crane, her friends, and the ghost from her past...

Blurb-
Thirteen years ago Amy Crane ran away from everyone and everything she knew, ending up in an unfamiliar city with no obvious past and no idea of her future. Now, though, that past has just arrived on her doorstep, in the shape of an old music cassette that Amy hasn’t seen since she was at university.

Digging out her long-neglected Walkman, Amy listens to the lyrics that soundtracked her student days. As long-buried memories are wrenched from the places in her mind where she’s kept them safely locked away for over a decade, Amy is suddenly tired of hiding.

It’s time to confront everything about her life. Time to find all the friends she left behind in England, when her heart got broken and the life she was building for herself was shattered. Time to make sense of all the feelings she’s been bottling up for all this time. And most of all, it’s time to discover why Jack has sent her tape back to her now, after all these years…

With her mantra, ‘New life, New job, New home’, playing on a continuous loop in her head, Amy gears herself up with yet another bucket-sized cup of coffee, as she goes forth to lay the ghost of first love to rest...

If you’d like to dip into my first contemporary romance, Another Cup of Coffee is available from all good book and eBook retailers, including-

by Michele de Winton

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Felicity Williams can't remember the last five years thanks to an accident that wiped out her memory. She fled her old life in hopes of starting fresh and found refuge working on a cruise ship. But her past is coming for her…
Rick McCarthy wakes after a climbing accident to discover that his business partner and fiancée has quit her job and disappeared. He’s trying to accept that she’s run out on him, but now he needs her signature to close a deal that could literally be life or death. He’ll go to any extreme to get what he needs…even if that means becoming someone else to win her back.
But a little lie becomes a large mess when they’re stranded on a deserted island together, and old misunderstandings might ruin their chance at new love…
Excerpt Four:
From page 198 –
George appeared at Felicity’s door with a huge block of chocolate he’d somehow managed to wrangle from the kitchens. “I tried for ice cream but they only had it in twenty-liter tubs. I figured that wouldn’t do either of our figures any good. Have to say I didn’t think I’d be getting a call from you tonight. Certainly not one that started and ended with a command to bring cookies and cream.”
 “Why not? I’m thinking of changing my food pyramid to have ice-cream at the top. I might as well go live in a nunnery for all the action I’m about to get.”
He gave her an odd look then rallied. “Oh, sweetcheeks, I think that would be a very bad idea. Can you image the havoc that would cause amongst the visiting monks? And you’d have to cover this glorious hair.”
“It’s hardly glorious. God, I’m a mess. No wonder he doesn’t love me. No one does. No one ever has except my parents and they’re dead. Oh my God, I sound so whiny, I’m never like this. Never.”
“Oh darling. We all love you.”
“Yes, but you have to. I’m in charge of paying you.”
“True. But we don’t have to like you. Here, stop that now, you’re getting blotchy.” George handed her a box of tissues and pushed her gently onto the bed.
Felicity gave a sniff and let her breath shudder out before she allowed herself to talk again. “I think you better hand over that chocolate.”
“That’s my girl.” Ripping open the packaging, George broke off a giant chunk. “I’d give you the whole block, but I think I better stay on ration duty, just till you’ve evened out. Don’t want you going into a sugar coma after you inhale the whole block in less than a minute.”
“Unfair. If a girl can’t ruin herself on chocolate, what’s the point of anything?”
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Thanks so much for having me over to chat. I’m pretty dang excited that the second of my Love on Deck titles is out now and the third will follow early next year. Yeay.
About Michele
Michele was born in the mid 1970’s amid a burgeoning sprawl of vineyards and new retirement homes. With two teachers as parents, her love of reading and books was cemented at an early age. Being a writer however, was not was she was supposed to do when she ‘grew up’. Despite training in law (or perhaps because of it) she has been a dancer, producer, writer, and all round arty type in various countries for most of her life.
Moving into writing full time in 2010 was like being a part of a contemporary romance – perfect! Creating new worlds for her characters, or rather letting those same characters show her their worlds is now a highlight of Michele’s daily life. And falling in love over and over as each hero and heroine allow their true feelings to surface is something very special. What a treat to do it every day! Now back home in New Zealand after travelling extensively, Michele writes from an office where the sound of the tapping keyboard is only rivalled by the whisper of wind in the trees.
